Daynis played a pivotal role in the redevelopment of the Fair Work Commission’s website—a key digital platform dedicated to facilitating fair workplace practices across Australia. As the technical lead, I steered the development of a more accessible and efficient website designed to serve the diverse needs of the workforce.
Project Overview:
The Fair Work Commission is vital in resolving workplace disputes and setting equitable standards. In collaboration with my team, we embarked on reimagining their digital presence to enhance service accessibility and justice. Our comprehensive redesign was informed by extensive stakeholder engagement, including over 19 hours of interviews that provided valuable insights into user needs and expectations.
Our audience encompassed a broad spectrum, from union members to industry leaders nationwide. By employing rigorous data analytics and stakeholder feedback, we identified specific user challenges and opportunities for digital improvement. This strategic insight guided our design and development process, ensuring the solution was inclusive and user-centered.
Solution Design and Execution: We transformed the Commission’s website with a focus on human-centric design, optimising it for clarity and ease of use for all users, including those with different abilities. The design moved away from a corporate aesthetic to a more contemporary, user-friendly interface. Key information was streamlined and presented in plain language to accommodate users for whom English is a second language.
Technical Enhancements: Recognising the website’s role in distributing over a million legal documents, we upgraded the platform to Drupal 9 for enhanced stability and future-proofing. Integration of Elasticsearch and Azure Cognitive Search significantly improved the search functionality, making it easier for users to find necessary documents and resources quickly.
Accessibility and Compliance: A major goal was to elevate the site’s accessibility to meet global WCAG standards, reducing the dependency on direct contact for support and ensuring compliance across all user interactions.
Outcomes and Impact: The redesigned website has not only streamlined the user experience but also provided the Fair Work Commission with deeper insights into their service impact. It has become a cornerstone of how the Commission understands and interacts with its audience, leading to improved efficiencies—marked by significant decreases in the time employees and small business owners spend on key tasks
